Press Release: Releasing Symbolic
Composer 5.3 Modular For Windows
|
|
--- VENICE, ITALY, 2007 FEB 3 --- We are proud to introduce
you the latest version of Symbolic Composer. Symbolic Composer
5.3 is one of the most advanced and largest music composition language
available. Included are 1500 page SCOM Reference Manual with detailed
examples and tutorials.

Symbolic Composer 5.3 for the Windows now includes the complete Cresc and Cadar
libraries. This new release finally brings SCOM for PC onto the same level as
the long-established Mac version!
Composers will specially welcome the Cresc and Cadar libraries as they bring
an extensive set of functions of real value to contemporary composition and
many are found nowhere else in today's computer tools for algorithmic music.
Cresc was devised by composer and educator Nigel Morgan (UK) as part of his
personal library of processing, generating and utility functions. Assembled
over some 15 years these functions extend the SCOM system primitives and
provide support for most compositional situations and pathways. Many of
these functions, such as those devised to process, generate and extend
tonalities are unique within algorithmic composition.
All the Cresc functions deal with real musical situations common to
21C vocal and instrumental composition. There are functions for the
control of dynamics, application and extension of harmony, the addition
of ornaments, and an extensive set of length processing functions
suitable for inserts, condensing, inversions, masking, randomization
and repeats. Symbol generation and variation utilities provide tools
for interleaving, de-mixing, masking, swallowing, and controlling
the evaluation of multiple progressions based on variations.
Some basic Cresc functions have been implemented on the previous SCOM
version, but this library now brings the full power of Cresc for
composers working on the Windows platform.
Cadar is a fascinating and comprehensive library created by composer
Jesper Elen (Norway), Director of the Norwegian Centre for Composers.
Like Cresc its functions deal with real musical situations and contain
many distinctive functions that process several musical parameters
simultaneously - for example in the powerful ornamentation functions
that output both pitch and rhythm. There are powerful and comprehensive
functions specified for chord processing, ornamentation, randomization,
composition with 12 tones handling, rhythmic morphing, and useful
utilities for tonality compression and conversion. Jesper Elen's
functions include valuable insights into systems devised by some of
the great composers of our time, for example Norgaard's infinity
series, Messiaen's permutation, and Stravinsky's rotation and reordering.
Symbolic Composer collects together over 1000 algorithmic tools that can
be applied to music composition: advanced mathematics, physics, genetics,
fractal & chaos theory. Composers can access within the system are all
chord-types, scales and tuning systems, and many historical compositional
methods.
Composer Nigel
Morgan says:
"There's some evidence that MIDI interaction in the standard sequencer or
score-writer seriously constrains conceptual reflection. Symbolic Composer
provides composers with a unique environment for thinking, experimenting
and modelling complete multi-orchestrated works without the confusion
and baggage of unnecessary performance data. Symbolic Composer is
probably the closest equivalent to paper-based composing there is,
only far, far more powerfulÓ
Symbolic Composer 5.3 Modular For Windows is a masterpiece of musical
engineering that now allows you to realize your masterpieces of music,
too!
