Systems/MRAC
Publishing today proudly announce Symbolic Composer 5.2 for the
Macintosh! Symbolic Composer 5.2 includes several enhancements compared
to the previous 5.1 version. These cover new randomization system and
new MRACSystem power-functions based on developments of Janusz
Podrazik's
composition Kritiken Nostalgia For String Quartet.
"The new MRACSystem functions were crucial for scoring and
analysis of the composition, since they jump into use of interval
structures over strict integer/symbol functions supplied by the
previous FLib Libraries. Mapping functions like m-to-tonality,
m-sequence and m-substitute allow to control list output, while
g-tuplet2 and g-tuplet3 were starting function for generating lengths.
The most important part in all my work is to use and control
multi-lists and not just one list. I hope some of them will be useful
to others in there creative process", the author Janusz Podrazik says.
The new random system allows the users add custom
randomization methods to the system, which is important when
compositional process is based on randomization -- since different
random series have a characteristic sound, and what is suitable for one
composer is not always the most prefered one for the other. Small
user-enhancements to the random system also guarantee that no other
composer can come up with the same sequence even the random functions
are based on the same seed.

Symbolic
Composer 5.2 is a well-defined and efficient resource of composition
tools for the experimental composer. The package includes full 1500
page SCOM Reference Manual, has over 1000 music algorithms suitable for
any style and complexity, and adds up also 300 microtonal
world-music/theoretical scales, standard scales and complete chord
system from the past 500 years of music history into the users toolbox.
Scores are written in simple text-based language, and compiled
to MIDI in few seconds. Direct playbact works with ITunes, Cubase,
Digital Performer, MasterTracksPro, MusicTime, Encore, Logic and
Sibelius, and with Shareware Players Mighty Midi, Sweet Midi and QMidi
-- after the score is compiled the file pops automatically to the
selected output engine. Compatibility to GarageBand, Reason, Reaktor
and stand-alone software synths and samplers is realized with General
MIDI files that can be imported into any industry standard music
software.
For the experimental composer Symbolic Composer provides a
rich toolbox of advanced fractal and chaos mathematics, available to
control any music parameters in micro and macro level. New functions
can be added on-fly with the build-in Lisp language.
User-Customizable Themes help to match SCOM 5.2 to studio lightning
conditions and personal preferences by changing window appearances, and
desktop background. For example, black windows are more suitable for a
dark studio, while white windows give the best contrast for daylight
working conditions.
Symbolic Composer 5.2 also includes powerful VLISP Lisp Visualization
System, that helps the composer to view complex Lisp and compositional
structures as tree-graphs. This welcomed option makes it easier to
learn the SCOM Music Language for a new-comer, too.
"There's evidence that MIDI interaction seriously constrains conceptual
reflection. Symbolic Composer steps forward providing composers with an
environment for thinking, experimenting and modelling complete
multi-orchestrated works without the confusion of performance data.
Symbolic Composer is the closest equivalent to paper-based composing
there is, only far, far more powerful", says composer Nigel
Morgan (UK).
SCOM 5.2 Macintosh upgrade is free for SCOM 5.1 Macintosh users.
