Press Release: Symbolic Composer 6.4 Alpha Released For the Mac Lion
2011, AUG 15 --- Symbolic Composer 6.4 Alpha for the Macintosh includes Lion compatibily, fixes and new features.

Symbolic Composer 6.4 New Features

This update focuses on compatibility, interface, MIDI output location and project handling issues. New commands were added on the menus, editor layout can be customize, there are more themes, two icon sets, opening files on the Desktop, revealing files in the Finder, Time Line and Local MIDI views, grouped browser listings, backup on/off control.

Logic, Garageband, .aif, .wav, .mp3 and other music application files can be placed in the My Projects folder, and launched from browser and menus. It is also possible to relocated My Projects folder into an external hard disk.

Lion Compatibility

  - Fixes bug that caused SCOM to crash on Lion (OS X 10.7).

Launching .scom files from the Desktop

  - double-clicking .scom docs on the desktop opens them in SCOM
  - .scom files can be dragged on the SCOM icon to open them
  - this feature requires that you only have SCOM 6.4 application
on the hard disk, otherwise OS X gets confused and may open
previous SCOM version, which does not know how to open the document

Launching Logic, wav, mp, aiff, and other files

  - Launching from the Menus and Browser views
  - .scom filetype is hidden, other launchable filetypes are shown
  - Adds freedom to place other music program files inside SCOM score folders.
  - Helps keeping project files together.

Time Line view on the Index Browser

  - Lists the contents of My Projects by date.
  - Helps to locate recently edited projects and launch other project files

Local MIDI Files view on the Index Browser

  - Shows locally stored MIDI files, and their maching SCOM scores
  - Helps to locate scores when using Local MIDI save feature

Grouped Browser Category Listings

  - Shows items grouped by their category.
  - Old alphabetical order can be switched on from Power Settings.

Reveal in Finder

  - Topmost Editor Window or selected item in the Browser view are shown in the Finder.
  - You can reveal also Output and My Projects folders from the menus.
  - Also revealed by command-, command-k command-l from the keyboard.
  - Together revealing and launching are very useful tools.

Extending Selection on Editor

  - Press shift to extend selection with mouse drag.
  - Relies on LW functionality, extension works downward from the initial start position.
  - Extension backward from start position makes start position the end position, which
is not exactly as in Mac where selection extends in both directions.

Editor with Divider

  - A second edit view appear when you drag the bottom bar of the editor window.
  - This allows to edit function parameters which reside in different places of the score.
  - It is experimental feature and not fully working.
  - Copy/Pasting works on the upper view only. Windows resize and saving restore both
locations to the same (should be fixed).
  - Clone Editor is better suited when you want to work independently on different parts of
    the score.
  - The divider is still useful to quickly check out what's happening in the other
part of the score and changing manually score parameters.
  - You can turn it off from Power Settings. After restart editor windows will display
    a single edit view.

Editor and Listener Wrapping

   - Wrapping character was removed. Wrapping does not add ! mark at the end of wrapped line.
   - Word-wrapping makes long Listener output and editor lines easier to read.

Easy to access Settings Menu

  - Hierarchy was flattened to provide quicker access to Settings.

File/Layout Menu added to the Settings Menus

Some like icons, some don't. Some prefer keyboard commands, some opt mouse. For different users there are selections on the interface:

  - SCOM Classic (buttons on left)
  - Icons Top (Mac-like layout)
  - Icons Bottom (aesthetical experiment)
  - Plain Window (for the keyboard-oriented user, for smaller scores)
  - Just Go & Lookup (for the keyboard-oriented user, for large scores)
  - Icons Top Minimum (Icons Top without icon texts)

File/Open Recent comand added to the menu

  - Keeps a list of recently edited .scom files.

File/Revert command added to the menu

  - Reverts to the last-saved version of a document that has been edited.

Compile MIDI/Show in Finder setting added to MIDI Playback Settings

   - Opens the output directory after score compilation has finished.

MIDI Output added to File/Settings Menus

  - This controls the path and filename where SCOM saves the MIDI file
prior loading it the MIDI Player. There are 3 options:

  - Use Compile Name & Path
  - Always Autoname to Output Folder
  - Always Autoname to Local Folder

By default the name and path are supplied with compile-song, compile-instrument
and play-file "name" parameter. This name can now include full pathname, too.

Other options always save the MIDI file using the score file name - no matter
what the "name" parameter tells. These are useful options, since the MIDI file
has the same name as the score file, making it easy to later find the score
  that produces particular MIDI file.

Use Always Autoname to Output Folder if you accustomed using Output Folder.

Always Autoname to Local Folder is handy, since it saves the MIDI file into
the same folder together with score file that produced it. Score and MIDI
files keep together, and at least Logic will save new project automatically
into the same SCOM score folder when the MIDI file is launched with Logic
(by selecting Player -> Logic. So, by choosing Always Autoname to Local Folder
you don't have to edit all your dozens or hundreds compile-song, compile-instrument
and play-file "name" parameters to start using Local MIDI saving.

MIDI File Autonaming

  - Names MIDI File using the Score filename to which it adds .mid filetype.

Remote My Projects location

  - When internal hard disk becomes full you can place My Projects folder in the external hd.
  - My Projects may contain subfolder of your projects, where you can store all other music
application files related to the SCOM score. This allows to keep SCOM score and its final
production notation and sequencer files together in the same place. All docs can be
    quickly opened from SCOM.

Project Menu Collapsing

  - Hide groups in Projects Menu.
  - Collapse group hierarchies on top level menu.
  - Speeds up browsing project folders and files.
  - Turn off menus which you don't need that often (they are available in the Browser).

More accurate Lookup Search

  - Allows launching of external filetypes, too.
  - Files can be revealed in Finder.
  - Lookup Search Windows are functional after Desktop and Snapshot Restoration.

Class System Unity Check Fixed

  - Bug that caused Terminal Message in score compilation was fixed.

Duplicate Index Check while saving new files

  - A warning was added if the filenam ehas been already been taken by the system index.
  - This ensures unique function docs and .mid <-> .scom file matching.
  - The checking can be turned off in the Power Settings.

Hiding Fileinfo and Saving Backups

  - No more duplicate filename items on the Finder view
  - Backups of the .scom files are saved in Backups folder on the same directory
    as the edited file.
  - Backup-saving can be turned off from the Power Settings. This enables completely
    clean score folder content.

Automatic Listener Clearing

  - Clears Listener on each eval selection or compile score (eval buffer).
  - This feature can be swiched on from the Power Settings
