that operate on a deeper level. They let you create - or generate -
unlimited number of unique melodies, tonalities,
rhythms and compositions.
Q: Hi, I primarily
utilize Modular Synthesizers along with computers to do Electro
Acoustic Music. I don't have
programming experience before, but I I'm looking to get a deeper feel
for melodies, amazing ethereal ideas based on sound and advanced
composition using Symbolic Composer. What would you suggest to me?
A: If you don't have
coding experience before, I would suggest the Symbolic Composer
Express. It has an excellent set of functions to start experimenting
with. It allows to create new melodies, rhythms and patterns and then
you can play them in a sequencer and make synth sounds. When
you'll get more experience on coding, you can also make full
multi-instrumented scores with the Express, which is fun. Or you can
generate 8..16 bar short scores that only use drums, bassline and
melody to get some new ideas, and arrange them in Logic, add some
manual playing, effects and generate some more patterns that would fit
the piece.
Q: How does it operate?
A: SCOM's intecface is
very simple: write the score and press Compile
button. This turns the score into a MIDI file and plays it back on
Logic Express or Logic Pro.
The score happens in the code window at the left. On the right
side you'll see browser windows that let you quickly browse through the
functions. Notice the window in the middle - this shows full
documentation of each function with snippets ready to be pasted into
your score. At the bottom is shown the SCOM Output window. It displays
the results of compilation and function output. It is highly-efficient
and fast-operating programming environment to
turn any musical idea into music.
Q: I'm interested in
purchasing SCOM Express. I the current version of SCOM Express
compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion?
A: Yes it is.
Q: Being a subset of the
professional SCOM version, can the feature set of SCOM Express be
considered finalised and complete? Can I upgrade SCOM
Express to the professional SCOM Alpha?
A: SCOM Express function
set is carefully selected and complete. When you need more functions
you can upgrade to the professional Symbolic Composer Alpha, which is
full compatible with the styles and outlook of Express and naturally
all your Express scores will run on it.
Q: In the
future what would sort of updates to SCOM Express would
constitute a chargeable upgrade?
A: If there would be new
functions to SCOM Express, or new interface tools then it would be a
chargeable upgrade.
Generate
SCOM is rich on generative functions, which enable to quickly create
source material for your scores. These are based on highly andvance
mathematical and physical theories that have interesting-sounding
applications in music making of any style.
Process
SCOM has many important processing functions available that let you
enhanche thematic material further. Actually, it is a whole new world
here when you daisy-chain SCOM processors into each other and use
generators as a source. They provide a rich source of variations and
ideas to progress further on your style.
Library
SCOM's library enables to store few bar loops and motices of rhythm,
melodies, chordal sequences, velocities and drum patterns. The library
includes many popular music styles and you are free to extend them by
yourself. Entries from the library are retrieved by a b a c d e a a b b
type of patterns.
Playback
Mac's internal Quicktime provides no-hazzle tools to play back quickly
your SCOM ideas. Traditionally the ideas for the piece are aually
realized while playing piano, guitar or synth. This way you pay
attention on the melodies, harmonies and rhythms in the first place.
If
you are more ambitious and need to use high-quality sounds you can use
Rondo MIDI Player and connect it to your software synth or sequencer by
IAC channels. The best way is naturally to let SCOM bounce the MIDI
file right up into the Logic.
Tonalities
Setups
SCOM includes General MIDI and Extended MIDI sounds and controllers,
which work with most synthesizers. You can also define your own setups
that allow to control custom softsynths, too.
Lookup and Locate
Help is just within a click. Enter a string in Lookup field and press
return. You can now browse all
the functions matching the search string. You can also locate full
fragements of scores where the item is used within scores are documents
by pressing the Locate button.
Browse
Document browser is a handy tool and allows you to open quickly your
score and SCOM documents. While SCOM menus show you the functions
within structure the browser lists them alphabetically in easy-to-grasp
groups, that are quick to browse through.
Lion Compatible
There
are many moods and lightning conditions, and you can adjust the SCOM
Express to match with your preferences. Coloring also helps to spot
keywords in the score, and you can turn off the colors, too.
